Neonode AirBar Review

You Really Need One –  A Neonode AirBar

If you think that there is no such thing as MAGIC, then THINK AGAIN!  The Neonode AirBar review has proved everybody wrong, for it is indeed MAGIC in itself!

What is the AirBar, and how does it work, but most important of all, how can it help you with your work and life?

In a nutshell, “It brings touch to your screen”.  But there’s more, a great deal more than meets the eye.

Since I’m used to using touchscreen monitors all day at work, and also when I use my smartphone or tablet, swiping and poking screens became second nature.  When that facility failed to work on my notebook, it was terribly annoying.  A simple action transformed itself into an absolute nightmare!

I needed a miracle, and the Neonode AirBar was just that.  It solved my problem, and quite efficiently, by transforming my notebook’s screen into touch.  It was amazing.  I just couldn’t get over it after years of being without such a luxury.   No, not just a luxury…it was more like a necessity!

The AirBar is so easy to install…

To mount the sensor, the screen’s bezel must be roughly 0.67 inches wide.  It’s important to centre this 3mm below the bottom edge of the display.    The width of the USB cord can be used as a reference.  Also, use the white alignment markers to centre the AirBar.

In fact, there is no installation at all.  Just plug it in, and TOUCH!  It works wonderfully both on notebook screens, as well as on standalone screens.

You’re right in thinking, “Why didn’t you buy a notebook with a touch screen incorporated in the first place?

You have a very good point, but I can justify why I didn’t.  In my opinion, notebooks with touch screens are a dreadful buy, and I’ll explain why!

For starters:

They are usually more expensive

I’m not in the habit of throwing my money down the drain, however, if you do come across a bargain sale, still avoid buying one because of…

The second drawback, which is:

Battery life is depleted much faster

This is a critical factor, especially if you don’t have your charger at hand, if you are not in a position to use a power outlet, or for whatever reason it could be.

An incorporated touch screen on a notebook simply hates your battery and wants to see it dead, with a vengeance, as soon as possible.    We’re talking about an average of 20% less battery life.  This is more than enough to start any alarm bells ringing.

The reason why your battery depletes faster is that even if you are not using the touch screen, this remains active all the time.   It’s a bit like being stuck in traffic, not covering any miles, but your engine is still running.  Your fuel gauge is still going down, whether you like it or not.  On a positive note, disabling the touch screen via the Windows Device Manager might help, but this doesn’t seem to make that much of a difference.

So, what options have you got?

Did I mention that you really need the Neonode AirBar?

One point worth noting is that when you’re done using the Airbar, you can just unplug it to save on battery life. Yes, it’s that Simple!  Your battery will love you for it, and life will be worth living once more.

The Neonode Airbar is a slender sensor which attaches to a notebook screen.  As mentioned before, it can even be used on a standalone monitor.  In both cases, however, it’s important you purchase the right sized AirBar.

In all honesty, it’s not really practical using it on a standalone monitor because of the limited length of the built-in USB cable that connects the device to your computer.  Unfortunately, it’s only nine inches long.  However, if needs must, you can always purchase a suitable cable from Amazon.

The AirBar comes in three different sizes, starting from  13.3 inches, with the next size up being 14 inches, and it goes up to 15.6 inches.   Please make sure to purchase the right sensor for your screen size, otherwise, you won’t be suitably impressed with its performance.

Features of the AirBar

It comes in matt black, just under 2 ounces in weight, and can be used to Pinch, Zoom, Sweep, Tap…and more.  This includes swiping from page to page, rotate your photos upside down, and scroll to the very end.  You can’t really ask any more from this thing.

When you think about it, its operation is quite ingenious, as it emits an invisible field of infrared light over your screen, which bounces off your fingers.  It literally bounces off anything you put in its path, and this includes a paintbrush, to a pair of oven mittens!  This happens to be very convenient if your hands are dirty, like when you’re following a recipe. You can interact with the screen without there being the need to actually touch it.

Ease of use

Nothing can be simpler, as all you need to do is plug it in to one of the available USB ports, and it can be used immediately.  There is not even the need to download any drivers, and there is also no need to have it calibrated in any way.  Plug it in, and watch the magic start to work right before your very eyes, or more suitably, at your fingertips.

It’s not every day you get to see real Magic.

The Airbar is not thick, at 0.2 inches, but it is designed to be removed before you close your notebook’s lid.  The Airbar holds in place by two tiny magnets, which come as part of the kit, making it super easy to remove, and re-attach later.

AirBar package

It is not bulky or anything, but normal caution must be exercised when transporting it around in your computer bag, as it can be damaged.  The magnets, being super thin, don’t scratch your computer when the lid is closed.

It’s very important to purchase the right length of the Airbar to work properly on your desired display size.  Failure to do so will not result in the desired response to your touch.

The 9 inch USB cable is somewhat of a drawback if your notebook’s USB ports aren’t close enough to be used.  These need to be on the right-hand side of the notebook, but if you’re stuck because a free USB port is out of reach, you can always get a cable as explained above.

Even though the manufacturers state that it’s designed for Windows 10, it’s also been used on Windows 8, as well as Windows 7 Pro.

Please note that a dedicated touch screen is more precise, but the Neonode Airbar is an inexpensive alternative which works very well indeed, and it comes with so many advantages.

Another plus to this is if you’re like me and hate using the notebook’s tedious touchpad, then, of course, you’ll also need a mouse.  Now, if you want ample elbow space on your cluttered desk, a mouse will only add further clutter to your already limited working space.

This, apart from being a pain, is also not productive in the least, whatever work you’re trying to do on your PC.

With no room to move about, the result is total frustration.  It’s even worse if you’re in a car, a train, or even on a plane.  In these conditions, using your notebook properly becomes something next to impossible.

Again, did I mention that you really need the Neonode AirBar

One of the major pros of this device is that it won’t hurt your budget as the price, starting from just $69, is just right.

The unit is so unique that it received the Innovations Award for CES2017, which is saying something.

All is not lost if you work with MacBooks, as you can get the 13.3″ AirBar for MacBook Air® notebooks.

Knowing all this about the Neonode AirBar gives you an advantage over those who don’t even know it exists.  I’m just disappointed in myself how I didn’t come to purchase one before.

Apart from knowing it exists and how it can help you, just like it has done me.  I think that for those who aren’t as yet the proud owners of such a device, they are really missing out on something efficient, something really awesome, and something which can easily be called… MAGICAL!

  1. That’s a nice device! I can give one to my husband, he is always on a tablet, and when he has to use his laptop, he’s completely mixed up, swiping the screen which isn’t a touchscreen.
Thanks! I didn’t know this existed!

    Kind regards, Loes

  2. It’s a beautiful device, and to be quite honest, as soon as I came across it, I nearly freaked out. It’s wonderful, and its made my life so much easier 🙂

Thanks for commenting, Loes…you’re too kind 🙂

  3. Wow! This gadget sounds like a neat little trick! I use both a PC, MacBook Pro and I also have a mini-Mac. I’ll have to give this a try. Thanks for the thorough review and information. Great to know!

    1. Hi Cynthia. Many thanks for taking the time to have a look at this product. I’m pretty sure that you will find suitable use for it at one point in time and thanks for your kind comments.

  4. I’ve never heard about AirBar- thanks for the information. It sounds like a very useful gadget to have. My IPad has this feature, but my MacBook does not. I assume that the same AirBar can be used for different devices, correct? Thanks.

    1. Hi there. I think it’s a wonderful invention actually, and whoever came up with the idea deserves a medal. There are AirBars especially made for MacBooks. There are basically two types, one for Windows, and one for MacBooks. It’s all about the software that’s inside the unit which can communicate with your computer.
